Delegation is primarily handing over the tasks pertaining to projects to your subordinates or the team. How well your delegation reaps effective results for the company determine your skills as a project manager!

Delegation is a great art and is imperative in any project’s success. Great delegation is not about just giving your team an easily achievable task but to ask them to take over challenging projects and accomplish them as well with utmost dexterity. More often than not, failure of company projects happen simply for the reason that either project management system is not aligned well or project managers aren’t efficient enough in delegating the tasks well in order.

As much as you spread, delegation gets indispensable. Most of the managers perceive themselves to be perfectionists and hence refrain from delegating tasks to their team with confidence. However, it is essential to have faith and lead your people with constant patience and attention.

Let’s look at some of the advantages of delegating tasks:

Being a project manager, delegating would enable you to attend to other priority tasks. The non essential tasks could be allotted to the juniors as crucial assignments and it indeed is a great way to build strong alliance with your subordinates and make projects successful.

It usually works as a great competency factor for managers, since you can take over your boss’ assignments, can you smell some real growth out there?
It helps you identify the skill sets of your employees and design motivation charts for them as well.

Effective delegation also helps offer newer challenges to the team that come as exciting opportunities.

Where on one hand great delegation helps in motivating team members and saving time, funds and building people, poor delegation may lead to crashes in projects, and dismantled project management software.

You may be great at delegating tasks, if you follow these tried and tested rules with your team:

You must have clarity of your objective.

The reason of your delegation must be very clear to you before you start allocating tasks to your employees.

The process gets easier and aligned.

Oh this one reminds me of the popular song, 'have a little faith in me', strike a bell? You just simply cannot rule your people; you must have trust in your team members to actually achieve full potential.

Design a delegation matrix before you execute your plan with your members. If you have a clear chart of how you want to delegate your tasks with your team members, it gets simplified to take action upon them.
Define the tasks and assess every individual according to the potential before delegating work further. This leads to effective management and desirable profitable results.

Mention your targets clearly to your members, so that your team would be clear enough on grounds of what is expected out of them. Along with, as a project manager, you also should be aware of the resources available as well as how to use them judiciously.
