When you talk about Del Valle, TX. most people think of southeast Austin where the Airport (ABIA) is. Residents in the area consider it an area that includes most of Southeast Travis County including, Garfield, Mustang Ridge, Creedmoor, Pilot Knob, east to William Cannon and parts of Montopolis. DVISD crosses the river to Hornsby Bend, and east to Garfield, and the Bastrop County line on highway 71 and FM 812. Del Valle is a large rural area (where generations of families have lived and continue to live) that encompasses more than just where the Airport is on Hwy. 71.

This area of Southeast Travis County is flatland with some small hills, which was mainly used for farming and cattle grazing. Many small older communities dot the area and are now blending in with newer subdivisions. Most people never realize that you can have a beautiful, unobstructed view in all directions from some of these hilltops including views of the Austin skyline with the hill country in the background. Like many Central Texas communities Del Valle and the surrounding area is growing at a rapid rate. The expansion of SH 130 and the realization of Del Valle’s close proximity to downtown Austin and ABIA is having an enormous impact on immediate and future growth projections.
The growth of far south Austin including the opening of Southpark Meadows at Slaughter Lane and I-35 (one of the first of this magnitude) that has been built along the I-35 corridor is a huge factor because it has brought more employment opportunities, restaurants, entertainment and shopping closer to all of the long time residents’ and newer communities being built in Del Valle and Southeast Travis County. Many new mixed-use projects are being planned and proposed in this area including a project on 2500 acres west of the Texas 130 toll road near McKinney Falls Parkway that includes homes, businesses and shopping. Prices for homes in subdivisions are still reasonable for the area and growth rate, but speculation about future growth has caused land prices to skyrocket, especially along the major arteries ( Hwy’s. 183,71,130) including FM 812 and FM 1327 Del Valle is not an incorporated city so building and development fall under Travis County and the City of Austin guidelines.

Most people don’t know about McKinney Falls State Park, with picnicking and camping facilities, Onion Creek and miles of wooded walking and bicycle trails, a wonderful place for a day trip or overnight camping, located here off highway 183 just a few minutes from downtown Austin. Southeast Metro Park is a large facility with hiking and biking trails, numerous baseball, adult softball and soccer fields, located on highway 71 just a few minutes east of Austin. A few miles farther is Bastrop, which has Lake Bastrop and Bastrop State Park. These are all only a few minutes away from Del Valle.
Builders such as Main Street Homes, KB Homes, Centex Homes and Lennar are a few that have been building communities here in the last few years. Some of these communities like Los Cielos, Berdoll Farms, The Meadows at Berdoll, and The Vistas at Stoney Ridge are expanding and have a few new homes left for sale, while the other communities are selling out at an amazing rate. Families are moving in as soon as the homes are built.
Employment for most Del Valle area residents’ means a commute to the Austin Metro area via Highways 71 or 183. SH 130 will give easier access across town to the northern part of Austin and Round Rock avoiding Mopac, Loop 360 and I-35.

The Del Valle ISD covers an area from FM 969 to FM 1327 north to south, and the Bastrop County line and part of the Montopolis area in Austin, east to west. To try and keep up with the rapid growth and the future growth projections the Del Valle ISD voters recently passed a bond referendum for 105,800,000. The package included, an Elementary School bringing the total to (8), a new Middle School (3), expansion and site infrastructure at Del Valle High School (1) and a new Opportunity Center. That will bring the total number to 13 schools in the area.
This package also includes acquisitions and infrastructure development for these new schools and there will be district-wide security, technology, accessibility, and energy management.
The Del Valle ISD is trying to insure efficient and effective operations from all departments, while providing quality and accommodating facilities amidst the rapid growth and development of the area.

Del Valle and this area of Southeast Travis County has been neglected, ignored or misused for many years hopefully the time has come for some planning and forethought to be used and this area can be brought to its’ full potential.
