Defensive Driving Guide - By: Kyle Clouse

There are many things that we can do to be safer drivers. To drive defensively is to be as alert and aware of our surrounding as possible. One of the most important things we can do for our own, and our family's safety, is to always wear seat belts. This will not prevent an accident from occurring, but it will greatly increase our chances for survival in the event of a crash.

Something to remember while on the road is to always be aware of what is happening 10-12 seconds ahead of your vehicle. This is especially true in winter driving connditions when the roads are wet and icey. Problems often start and greatly increas when our ability to react to them is dimished when we do not see them coming. Do not only focus on what is happening right in front of you also be aware of the left, right and rear of your vehicle.

Too always be scanning the area around you is to be a good defensive driver. These may include, but are not limited to bicyclists, pedestrians, construction, debrie that has fallen from a vehicle, changing road conditions, and stopped or slowed traffic. While operating your motor vehicle you should be monitoring your mirrors every few seconds. A good defensive driver will always be aware of conditions in front of and in back and sides of the vehicle he or she is operating.

Signaling your intentions early will give other drivers enough time to react to your changes. Use turn signals, horn, and lights where appropriate to communicate with other drivers. You want to provide yourself with at least 2 seconds of signaling time before changing lanes. Failing to use your lights, turn signals, hazzards and horn appropriately can greatly enhance the likleyhood of being in a automobile accident.

Always have an escape route. Followig too closely will not allow enough reaction time for changes that may occur. Allow enough time, space and visibility to avoid an accident successfully. Follow these defensive driving tips, and you will be much more likely to avoid an accident. If the time comes that you find yourself in an accident it is crucial that you stay calm, remain in the vehicle and check for any injuries. Call the local authorities and give them the location of the accident along with any other information that may be useful. It is also important to document early what transpired in the accident and take photos if able. Exchange insurance information and understand your rights before speaking with an insurance company regarding the accident.
