Decorating Your Home with Window Blinds - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Window blinds are often thought of as minor parts in the interior of a house, not directly involved in enhancing the beauty of a room and usually perceived plainly as window shades. However, with the proper choosing and coordination of other interior elements, these window blinds could actually become center of attraction and may make your room shine through even when the shades are all shut.

In lofts with wide windows or even in penthouses, the use of vertical blinds is deemed important. The size of glass windows in these places are often big, revealing a clear view of the inside to the external environment. Surely, anyone who lives in such would want privacy and would want to at least control light that enters through the window during the day. Aside from its relevance function-wise, vertical blinds are also important for their aesthetic purposes. These provide a feeling of comfort and contribute to the ambiance you want your room to exude.

The use of window shades have become popular in earlier times. The minimalist period has brought the trend of using neutral shades such as whites and beiges. This style continues to stay popular in order to keep interior designs neat and simple yet elegant. This is not always the case. They say you can never make a mistake in choosing white—wrong. Trying to keep things simple all the time could make your room look boring. Vertical blinds by themselves have been perceived as boring pieces, choosing them in boring colors will only make your blinds live up to this reputation. Many of us think that a busy looking room makes the space look smaller and thus to avoid making it seem too small, we go for plains and neutrals without realizing we're only making our room look really dull.

Fans of modern interior opt to go for bolder choices giving their homes more character and attitude. If you have a small room, go for bold and bright colors, some items with prints as accents. Don't be afraid to make it a little busy rather than plain boring. Choose window blinds that stand out if you have a plain room, and ones in a subtle color and material if your room is already pretty busy.

When choosing the color of window blinds or even curtains for your home, always consider the light that you are getting outside. Apartments, for example, have different orientations and therefore the light that enters may differ. For homes wherein light enters in the morning and those who barely receive light from the outside need to be warmed up with color to provide warmth. On the other hand, houses which receive light later on in the day, say sunset, do not need much artificial warmth. For this, choose curtains and blinds with colors which are not reddish in hue.

Blinds also create optical tricks for your room, so make sure you pick one that enhances your room's features. Vertical blinds, curtains and all other dense window treatments help make a low ceiling appear higher. Roman blinds and Venetian blinds meanwhile, create a more relaxed and comfortable look.

Experts in interior design say window décor should be given as much attention as all other pieces of furniture in your home. Let your imagination run wild and give your place a splash of color. There are no rules in letting light shine in to your home through your own windows.
