Decoding the Different Types of Hypnosis - By: Cliff Yvon

Hypnosis comes in different types. It mainly consists of traditional hypnosis, the Ericksonian method, NLP or neuro-linguistic programming and self hypnosis.

These types of hypnosis are the most common forms used for tapping into the subconscious mind. All of these forms can be used to treat and modify any aspect of your life. They can be used as a relaxation technique, a mood changer and much more.

Traditional Hypnosis

When you hear about hypnosis, you often picture the entire process of a subject together with a hypnotist. This setting is usually seen in traditional hypnosis. The hypnotist induces a hypnotic trance to his or her subject to put them in a trance state. Then the hypnotist will state positive suggestions that are directed to the subject’s subconscious mind.

Not everyone is likely to be hypnotized using the traditional way. Some people may react better using a different approach. Some practitioners use the Ericksonian technique to gain access to the unconscious.

Ericksonian Hypnosis

The Ericksonian technique, founded by the late Milton Hyland Erickson, is believed to be very effective in tapping into and influencing the subconscious mind.

This approach uses “metaphors” or stories that associates to the subject’s situation. These stories will be accepted by the conscious mind and will be moved towards the unconscious mind. The hypnotist will then add value to the story by giving out a moral lesson which in return, will be imprinted on the subconscious.

The Ericksonian approach works best if the person’s consciousness is being resistant to change, new ideas or suggestions. These metaphors will serve as the tool to help the practitioner to cross the barrier of the subconscious mind.

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Another approach that became popular today is the Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or commonly known as NLP. This technique utilizes the person’s behavioural patterns in relationship with their subjective experiences.

This approach aims to increase the self-awareness of people in order for them to change unwanted patterns of their emotional and mental behaviors. One of the most popular methods to effectively conduct this technique is the use of anchoring.

All of these three approaches are a very powerful and effective way to tap into the subconscious. However, learning and mastering these techniques requires intensive research, study and training. You also need a lot of experience in order to effectively apply them in various cases.

But, there’s another approach that is very simple and easy to use. Everybody has the ability to use this method of putting oneself into a deep trance and therefore hypnotize them self. It is called self hypnosis.

Self Hypnosis

This technique has been used by numerous people to create significant changes in their lives. It easily allows people to reach their subconscious mind without any help of a hypnotherapist.

If you wanted to perform self-hypnosis all you would need is a script that will serve as your guide throughout the process. The script may come in various formats such as an audio, video, book or a manual. Hypnosis scripts provide the statements needed for the induction, hypnotic, autosuggestion and waking phase. Using this tool can guarantee a person will experience a successful hypnosis process.

In conclusion, people have their own unique approach to putting themselves into a hypnotic state. Everybody is hypnotizable. Whatever type of hypnosis that works best for you, you have the chance to alter or modify any of your negative beliefs and unwanted patterns of behavior.
