Mosquitoes reproduce and excreet their offspring in standing waters. Through the first section of a mosquitoes life, the larvae feeds and swims in this pond. The larva will feast upon algae and microorganisms on top of the water. After they pupate and get to the mature stage, they will emerge from the water and go to the air. For this reason you will often find huge amounts of mosquitoes around wetlands or areas where there is stagnant water.

Male and female mosquitoes both feed on nectar of flowering plants. Exactly why do they have to bite people then, if not necessarily for food? The female mosquitoes require iron and protein from mammal blood in order to create offspring and reproduce. Most of these female mosquitoes are going to look for people to feed on during dusk and dawn.

To ensure that the mosquito (or any blood sucker) to draw out the blood from its host, it must halt the blood clotting process. Mosquitoes inject their spit into their host that contains proteins that halt the immune system and blood clotting. Then your blood then freely passes into the mosquito’s proboscis. When your body's defense mechanisms finds out something is not right, your body will release histamines and cause the area to swell. The swelled veins inside the bite location are what make the itchy feeling.

Mosquitoes are not just bothersome for their itchy attacks, but they could also transmit harmful illnesses. Malaria is the most common. It is a parasitic ailment that causes fever, shivering, joint pain, nausea, as well as other flu-like symptoms. If left untreated it can result in fatality. Other mosquito carried illness includes West Nile virus, yellow fever, and dengue fever.

Approaches to combat mosquitoes include obtaining a mosquito trap, use mosquito repellent or entice animals which eat mosquitoes to live in your garden. A few of these creatures are bats, mosquitofish, dragonflies, and various types of birds.

Probably the most common types of mosquito repellent is citronella. Citronella is an essential oil which can be extracted from the foliage and stems of plants in the Cymbopogon family. The 2 typical ones are lemon grass and citronella grass. Citronella oil is a non-toxic biopesticide that will repel mosquitoes. Though it may be non-toxic, it can irritate the skin of some people. Thus, it should not be applied with small children.
