Date Night In Your Living Room - By: Jamie Simpson

Many couples who have children find it hard to carve out time for themselves and their relationship. Scheduling a regular date night is one way to provide some quiet time to strengthen this bond. Date night may conjure up images of candlelight dinners at a local restaurant or perhaps going to a concert, but going out is not always possible. Consider staying home, closing the blinds and enjoying a date night in the comfort of your own home.

Child Care
When date night is scheduled it is much easier to schedule an activity for the kids. If they are old enough to sleep over they can stay at friends for the night. Younger kids can visit grandparents or family friends for a couple of hours. Consider hiring a babysitter to take the kids to a movie or other local attraction for the afternoon or evening. Date nights don't have to actually be at night to be fun. The object is to spend some quality time together without the stress of children. If the kids have to be at home, provide a babysitter to play with them in their bedroom and generally keep them out of your way. You can still spend time together without being interrupted.

What to Do
Staying home for a date night can be very romantic with a little planning and preparation. Get take out from a favourite restaurant and serve it on your best dishes. If you are feeling adventurous try setting up dinner in the living room instead of at the dinner table. Choose finger foods that can be easily fed to each other. Turn off the lights and add some ambience with candles and soft music. Don't forget to close the blinds to help shut out the rest of the world.

Some couples enjoy cooking together and date night is the perfect time to prepare a meal that doesn't involve food for the kids. Plan the meal ahead of time and make sure all ingredients are available to avoid the interruption of running to the market. Spend the evening preparing and eating a wonderful meal.

Some couples enjoy movies and date night is a great way to enjoy watching an old favourite or a new release. Watching at home means no crying children, people talking or other distractions. Rent several movies ahead of time so you have some choices. Pop some popcorn or some snacks, close the blinds and sit down to enjoy the movie together, in the quiet of your own home.

Date night can also be a time to just enjoy being together without needing to take care of the kids. Consider playing a card game or board game together. There are many choices available and this is a great way to spend time chatting without interruptions.

Date night is a great way to reconnect with each other when the rest of life is busy. Relax and enjoy your time together.
