Data Protection, Disk Encryption - By: Edwin Grace

The types of computers that we use with business and for personal use are constantly changing. Perhaps we are still using a

desktop computer, as they tend to be more powerful but we may also regularly use mobile computers, such as laptops and

tablets. It is important for you to understand how to protect yourself, regardless of whether your computer happens to be

stationary or if it goes with you wherever you go. There are some simple tips which can help you to make the most out of

your security and to make sure that your data is as safe as possible.

As far as mobile computers are concerned, you are generally going to be using some type of wireless network in order to

connect to the Internet. It is very important for you to make sure that you have WEP enabled so that you can encrypt the

information that is traveling over the network. It should be noted, however, that this is only a partial measure because it

is breakable. That is why along with increasing the data that is traveling over the network, you should also employ some

type of disk encryptionbecause that form of data protection is much more secure.

On computers that are stationary, you may also need to enable some type of WEP network security, although not all

stationary computers are going to be connecting through a wireless network. If you're connecting through a hardwired

network, you would still want to make sure that you have your firewall setup properly in order to provide a line of defense

against anyone that is trying to enter in through the network. You would also want to make sure that you were protecting

the data that is on your computer by encrypting it as well. It is up to you whether you're going to go with a full disk

encryption or if you are only going to protect the more sensitive data on the computer but in either case, it is something

that should not be overlooked.

For large networks, one of the problems that can occur is the fact that people who are using the network are not aware of

how to do so safely. Unfortunately, this can lead to a number of different problems, including malicious individuals

installing spyware onto your computer without you knowing about it. That is why it is important to make sure that you are

not only educating your employees about the proper use of the Internet, you are running high quality antivirus and anti-

spyware programs as well. This will not only help to protect the computer where those programs are running, it will help to

keep anything malicious from spreading through the network.

These are just a few of the many different things that you can do in order to protect yourself and the network that you are

using. If you have things set up properly, you can safely navigate the Internet and use your personal information without

having to worry about somebody stealing it in the process.
