Dash lights for Police Vehicles - By: Punjabi Sunil

Dash lights are a relatively recent innovation in police lighting and have taken the police department by storm. They are a variation of light bars that are usually mounted on top of the police vehicle. Dash lights are mounted on the dash inside the police vehicle and can easily be retracted and stored. With the formation of special police branches such as undercover police, there was a need for less conspicuous and descript police lights that can be stored away and used only when necessary. They have made a triumphant debut on unmarked police vehicles, and protected the identity of numerous undercover police officers as well as volunteer emergency workers. They many come in two forms; strobe dash lights and LED dash lights. The LED's are however a more resent development in the field of dash lights and have special advantages associated with them, which I will further discuss.

Unlike strobes, LED dash lights are significantly brighter. This translates to a more effective visual warning for police cars. The brighter lights have made it harder to ignore dash lights, since they are mounted on the dashboard inside the vehicle. LED dash lights also use less energy, and are much friendlier to the car battery as they do not drain it. They are traditionally hooked up to the car battery using special wiring, although newer ones come with a rechargeable battery pack. The less energy use is also an advantage, as they do not need constant charging or replacing, saving both time and money. LED dash lights are also specially configured to ensure that they do not flood the car with light. This is important, as strobe lights have been linked to deteriorating eyesight of police officers. This also ensures that they do not disorient the police officer as the light is inside the vehicle as opposed to the roof of the vehicle.

LED dash lights also emit less heat, which does not interfere with the comfort of the driver. Less heat also means that they are significantly more environmentally friendly, which is an important aspect now that there is the real problem of global warming today. Although LED dash lights are initially expensive to install, but their long life guarantees cost saving in the long run, as they do not need to be constantly replaced. LED dash light also has a wider variety of flash patterns, which makes them even more noticeable. Since they are in the inside of the vehicle, they need more configurations than light bars to make sure that they can be seen. The larger variety of flash patterns ensures that they are easy to spot, a factor that is vital for effective policing.

One of the recommended types of dash lights is the Fury OX LED that was released in the beginning of 2009. It is relatively small which means that it is easy to carry and conceal. They are also bright and have a special coating to prevent the dash light from flooding the vehicle with light. There are many other dash lights available in the market and one need to do sufficient research before purchase to ensure that you get a quality product.
