Danny Wallace - Manchester Uniteds Rampant Winger - By: ChrisMarker

Born and maturing in Greenwich, South East London, Danny Wallace kick started his professional footballing career with Second Division side Southampton as an associate schoolboy in February 1977. A tiny and compact left winger, Wallace made an immediate impact at The Dell and he became the youngest ever Southampton first team player when he proceeded to make his senior debut for The Saints in a outstanding 1-1 draw with Man Utd in Nov 1980 aged only sixteen years and 313 days. The lavishly skilled player also made a piece of soccer history when he made an appearance with regard to his cherished Southampton at home to Sheffield Wednesday together with his 2 brothers Ray and Rod on the 22nd of October 1988. Always in the middle of action, his performances for the South Coast outfit eventually earned him an England cap against Egypt in January 1986.

Impressed by the prodigious young player, dedicated Man Utd manager Alex Ferguson brought him to Old Trafford in a £1.2 million transfer deal in the autumn of 1989. His Manchester United career began with a high note and he was the club´s very first choice left winger during the 1989-90 campaign. Probably, the pinnacle of his career came when Manchester United won the 1990 FA Cup final in opposition to Steve Coppell´s Crystal Palace side. Even if he continued to win the European Cup Winners' Cup final against Barcelona the next year, the bandy legged winger never quite been able to fulfill his obvious potential. When Lee Sharpe made his breakthrough at Manchester United, Wallace noticed his first team opportunities more or less vanish into nothing and the annoyed footballer was hereafter loaned out to lowly Millwall.

As things eventually turned out, Danny Wallace played in his last game for Man Utd in a narrow 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford in The month of january 1993. Later that year, Wallace was transferred to Birmingham City for an estimated transfer fee of £250,000 after making only 47 league appearances for Manchester United. Although his health difficulties had started at Old Trafford, they got even it got worse at the Midlands club, and after a short spell with Wycombe Wanderers the tiny flankman had his soccer career tragically cut short because of serious illness. The rampant Danny Wallace had his testimonial match in May 2004 when a Southampton selection played an All Star team at St. Mary's Stadium.
