Daily Trader - By: Herbert Berger

Five of the ten goals scored in the first half were against bottom half sides and only two of the goals came before 25 minutes, both against Ipswich (9 and 18 minutes). The highest number of their goals 68% (15/22) were scored and conceded in the second half (15-3), and it’s interesting to note that 60% (9-15) of their second half goals came in the last ten minutes without conceding.

Portsmouth have won 14% of all their 14 league away games this season (W2 D4 L8), one of their last four (W1 D1 L2) and won their last game against Peterborough 0-3. They have a similar record against top-six sides only winning 20% of their last 10 (W2 D2 L6), they are without a win this season losing three of four (W0 D1 L3) and they lost their last game against Cardiff 3-2 last month, but did lead in the match at one stage.

They have kept clean sheets in 29% of their away games this season (4/14) and at half time they kept a clean sheet in 42% (6/14) of these games. They were losing at half time in five of these games and are unbeaten in their last five (W1 D4 L0). Against top-six sides they have kept a clean sheet in two of their last nine, in one from four this season and six had two or more goals, including two from three this season. They were losing at half time in three of these games and in one from four this season.

They have scored 13 and conceded 19 away this season and 64% ended with less than 2.5 goals, but their last two had over 2.5 goals. Only 29% of their away games (4/14) ended with over 3.5 goals, however, three were against top half sides Middlesbrough, West Ham and Cardiff and the other was against former top-six side Derby. Against top-six sides 60% of their last 10 had over 2.5 goals, including three of four games this season, and eight from nine had at least two goals.

In terms of goals scored and conceded away this season they opened the scoring in 35% (5/14), conceded first in 57% (8/14) and 50% (16/32) of all goals were scored or conceded in the first half (5-11). Also ten of the 16 goals scored in the first half came in the first fifteen minutes and they were all against top half sides (8-2). They scored or conceded 50% (16/32) of their goals in the second half (8-8) and 11 were scored in the last 30 minutes (5-6).

The statistics, both historically and for this season, suggest Birmingham will win this match, however, Portsmouth’s away record against top-six sides up to half time this season suggests the first half could be close, so backing Birmingham before the off makes little appeal. Both team’s goal statistics against similar sides this season suggest there could be goals in this match, but 70% of their last 10 corresponding league fixtures had less than 2.5 goals including their last two, so an over/under goals bet or trade cannot be advised with any confidence.
