Dachshund Puppies - Being The Dogs Leader Is A Key To Effective Training - By: Felipe Odonnell

Now that you have a dog you must learn the right way to teach your new family pet. The following information will give you the tools needed to give you the best learning experience that you can possibly pass on to your loved pooch.

When training your dog, try to use positive reinforcement. Instead of harshly scolding the animal when it does something wrong, reward it with a small treat when it behaves how you want it to. Soon enough, your puppy will learn to only do the behaviors that earn treats, becoming perfectly trained in no time.

A tip for small dog owners: make treats small to ensure your dog doesn't become full during training sessions. Believe it or not, a dog will work just as hard for a treat the size of a pin-head as he will for a treat the size of your thumbnail. This way, training sessions can last longer and be more interesting.

Create a bridge between the dog's response to a command and the reward for success. By saying a bridge word such as "yes" or "good", you will reinforce that the behavior is acceptable and the reward will follow. Keep using this bridge word even after training is complete to be consistent with your pet.

To help train your dog, you must assert yourself as the dominant one in your relationship by refusing to give the dog undeserved attention or food. When you convince your dog you run the show and, in addition, let the dog recognize you can use that power to give it something it wants, your dog will obey your commands more effectively.

It is of utmost importance that you portray yourself as a calm and confident leader when you are training your dog. Dogs are pack animals, and they only feel secure and willing to obey and submit when they trust that you are a capable leader of the pack. When your dog looks up to you as the leader, it will be eager to please you and it will obey your commands.

Dogs can get bored easily. If you are training a young dog, keep your training sessions short as his attention span is short. To keep older dogs from getting bored, vary their training routines and change up his rewards and treats. If you notice your dog is bored during training, take a break and resume at a later time.

When crate training a young puppy you must be consistent. When you let the puppy out of his crate you must immediately and unfailingly allow him the opportunity to relieve himself. Over time the puppy will be able to wait until the appropriate opportunity to answer the call of nature.

House training your puppy can be a lot faster and more effective using a crate. The crate should never be used for punishment. The puppy should be put in it at night and in between times of interaction with his owner. His natural instinct is to not relieve himself in his sleeping area.

When teaching your dog how to walk on a leash, hold your ground if he attempts to pull you. Plant your feet and do not budge until the dog stops pulling. Your dog will realize that he gets nowhere by pulling. When you are able to get him to walk beside you, reinforce the habit with treats.

In conclusion, dogs are among the best animals to have as pets due to their lovable and affectionate nature. This makes them a good companion for anyone no matter how old they are. Though dogs are great, they can be difficult to train. However, if you use the tips from this article, you can make dog training easier.
