DIY and Eco Living - By: Brigette Federico

Whilst it remains to be seen whether or not meals will come in pill form, shelving units will grow organically from the walls of giant plant-houses and hover-board gangs will terrorise the streets of New Londonopolis, there are certain future predictions that can be made with more perceptibility.

The role of environmentally ethical living is a central one to almost every facet of modern life. Eco-living and its place in the home is one of ongoing discussion. Sustainable housing legislation already dictates certain boundaries and essentials in terms of building regulations. However the discussion of built home eco-adaptation covers broad ground.

Energy – How a home is powered could be up for grabs in the future. The availability (and affordability) of renewable energy sources like solar, wind and biomass energy is already making them a seriously viable option.

Waste – DIY recycling will likely reach a point whereby all biodegradable waste can be dealt with at home.

Modular living is on the increase. By creating modular options in terms of everything from shelf storage and furniture to garden buildings and décor, designers are created. Perhaps many homes develop to be identifiably a “look” from a particular shop or brand, but within that extra dimension of creative freedom is borne some truly new, innovative design.

The increased complexity of design could be seen as something that may kill off home DIY. However the general consensus amongst designers and environmentalists is one of optimism. The ethical awareness that comes with eco living is central to its success – for example, knowing a shelving unit is made from ethically produced materials, turning on hot water heated 100% by biomass, giving new life to an old shelf storage system with organic paint.

The place of DIY in future eco living will be a prominent one, rife with environmental awareness, new skills and a clear message to pass on to future generations.
