Firstly, before running off to buy self racks, giant tubs of paint, a workbench or even a single nail, every DIY enthusiast needs something safe, mobile and well-organised in which to keep their tools. A simple purpose-made tool box could suffice, or for the more passionate DIY devotee, something like a mobile racking system.

Metal Tape Measure and Pencil
These items are the bones of any DIY job. Keep the pencil sharp, as no matter how small the job, precise measurement is the baseline for success.

No other tool in your kit is likely to see as much use as the tape measure. As something likely to be used in almost all DIY endeavours, from putting up shelf racks and organising modular furniture to seeing if the new fish tank will fit in the alcove, a reliable tape measure is crucial.

Claw Hammer
Bog-standard, reliable and efficient. Be sure to buy the most suitably weighted hammer in reference to personal strength and body size.

Screwdriver
Before it was helping teens the world over stumble into gutters on Saturday nights, the screwdriver was an essential tool. Multi-use screwdrivers with a variety of cross/slotted attachments are the best option.

Allen Keys
Keeping track of individual keys is bizarrely difficult. Variety sets are cheap and could be a godsend come moving day.

Pliers and a Wrench
Although one can occasionally be substituted for the other, an adjustable wrench and suitably-sized pliers can, between them, accomplish a staggering array of tasks. Most pliers also come with a nifty little wire cutter incorporated, which is great for stripping wire - helpful for those bothersome electrical chores.

Bits and Bobs
A “misc” draw in any mobile racking or toolbox is a great place where you may come across JUST the item required – nails, screws, fuses, glues, hooks – saving spares and leftovers could save some pennies in the future.
