Cutting Costs Is Easy With Six Sigma - By: Craig P Calvin

Everyone is cutting costs these days so it might be a good idea to reevaluate the way you run your business and make sure that you are providing the best customer service whole giving your employees a great incentive while the economy continues to struggle and the bottom line becomes even more and more difficult to navigate. That is where the Six Sigma approach to business comes in handy. It is a new system that is taking the business world by storm and can save you and your employees a lot of headaches as the nation continues to deal with the current economic recession.

Most companies would much rather ride out the recession than file bankruptcy, but the real question is - can your business use the six sigma method to revamp their business? The answer is yes, any business can adopt the six sigma method if they stay on the roadmap of the system and not forget any step. The first place to start is design: figure out the problem, does the company have too much overhead, too much inventory? It is a lot like a teacher defining a lesson plan. Figure out the objectives necessary, and start an outline of what your objectives are. This is a good place to start because if it was not broken, it would be working, but obviously something is wrong because sales are down which drives down the profits.

The next stop is to measure: collect facts and data not opinions. Of course, you want your team to work together and brainstorm, but do not forget to look at the facts of the matter which is the numbers. Numbers tell all, and they look at you right in the face so it is hard to ignore the numbers use them to measure where the money is coming in, and most of all, where it is going. Our third stop is to analyze: take the current state of the numbers and analyze them, look at what the numbers are saying or in some cases not saying. This area also exposes where improvements should be which is our next step.

The objective is to develop and implement ideas that will help the business by using basic statistics and, if that doesn't sound like the most romantic way to do things, it has been proven to work. Sometimes cold and hard numbers are more important than ideas.

The final step is control: control what is happening after the changes have been implemented. This is important because after about 3 or 4 months it would be wise to start the process all over again. Whether your business is struggling, or if your business is successful, the six sigma system can and does work for any business as long as the correct steps are done in the correct order.
