Cuno Water Filters - Are They As Effective As Everyone Thinks? - By: V K Rajagopalan

Cuno water filters are very popular on the market today. The company, 3M, sells a lot of units every year and has become a household name in hundreds of thousands of homes around the world. As a result, Cuno is the first name that comes to a lot of people's mind when they think of buying a water filter. What is so special about Cuno? Is it really as effective as most people think? Is it affordable? These are some of the issues I will be discussing in this article.

Cuno water filters remove more than 90% of contaminants present in tap water including heavy metals, cysts, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), THMs (trihalomethanes), atrazine, benzene, and chlorine. While this is certainly impressive, it is not enough to make tap water safe enough to drink and to use for other purposes. Let me tell you why.

Tap water, as you probably know, is extremely contaminated. The amount of harmful contaminants present in tap water is so high that unless you remove more than 99% of these contaminants, you cannot say that it is safe enough to drink. With this being the case, you cannot trust any water filter that does not remove these contaminants completely. It is for this reason that I think Cuno water filters are not the best when it comes to water purification.

According to experts, old methods like distillation and reverse osmosis are not good enough to get rid of the wide range of contaminants present in tap water. For that, they recommend new, sophisticated methods like multi stage active carbon filtration, sub micron filtration, and ion exchange which are a lot more effective than any other conventional water purification method. A combination of these methods can easily remove the harmful substances present in tap water and give you pure water for all your needs.

The best thing about the methods I have mentioned above is that they are not only effective, but are also affordable. A kitchen water filter based on these methods will only cost you about $125, whereas Cuno water filters can easily cost you more than $300. So, in my opinion, both cost wise and quality wise, an active carbon filter is better than Cuno filters.

The most important thing you need to remember is that you need to be very careful with your choice of water filter today. The hazards of drinking contaminated water cannot be stressed enough and so you need to choose an effective water filter that can get rid of the harmful contaminants and give you pure water.

I feel that there are several choices in the market today for the consumer to make an informed decision. If you are planning to buy a water filter, then get inputs on the various brands both from the internet as well as other users so that you can get the best protection for your family.
