Creating artworks out of the everyday - By: Rutland

Creating a cityscape out of staples is not an everyday occurrence for most people but one that artist Peter Root has put on display this year. Peter used 100,000 staples and small items of office stationery to create a work called Ephemicropolis. The work is 20ft by 10ft and took him 40 hours to build and is on display in the atrium of a building in Guernsey.

Rather like rows of dominoes, the stacks of staples were placed very close together and it wouldn’t have taken much for them all to fall over. In fact parts of the denser parts of the city crashed on a couple of occasions costing Peter several hours in time to rebuild.

The cityscape is reminiscent of skyscraper rich cities such as New York and the staples are arranged in clumps of varying heights from a single staple to stacks of around 5 inches in height to give the city skyscraper effect.

Creating artworks from the everyday is not new. Other artworks like Rachel Whiteread’s large and complex piece called Embankment used stacks of white casts made from the inside of many different sizes of boxes. In 1993 she received the Turner Prize for her work House which was a cast made from a demolished house which used to be situated in the East End of London. Rachel’s work usually involves casts made from ephemera and the everyday. One of her latest pieces, a Holocaust memorial for the city of Vienna, is casts of shelves with books placed on them, all with their spines placed inwards. Her artwork Embankment is on display in the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern.

Creating artworks out of the everyday has begun to figure quite large within the art establishment, even going back as far as Van Gogh’s painting of Gauguin’s chair and perhaps more recently Tracy Emin’s artwork My Bed which also won the Turner Prize (1999).
