Creating a Supportive World for the Special Children - By: Alvin dos

Once there was a farmer in a village who had some puppies. One day the farmer wished to sell the puppies and designed a board to be displayed on the edge of his yard. When the farmer was nailing up the board, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down and found that a little boy was pulling his trousers. When farmer want to know why the boy was pulling his trousers, the boy replied, “Actually sir, I want a buy a puppy. I saw your board and thus came here”.

The farmer said to the boy, “But my dear son, these puppies came from a good parents and cost a good deal of money”. The little boy put his hand inside the pocket, took out some coins and held it before the farmer, “I have got thirty nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?”. The farmer smiled and let out a whistle calling the dog and the puppy. The mother dog came out of the dog house followed by four little puppies. As the dogs made their way to the farm, the little boy noticed that slowly another puppy appeared. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up. Pointing to the runt, the little boy said, “I want that one”.

The farmer said to the boy, “Son, don’t take that puppy. This puppy can neither run nor play with you”. The boy then showed the farmer the artificial leg that he was using and replied, “You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands”. Everyone wants a person or a support in life who can understand them. There are thousands of children worldwide who are suffering from mental or physical disorders and thus need some special care and affection for themselves. When we talk about the special kids, we can distinguish themselves into different categories- emotional, mental or physical disabilities, as well as kids who have learning difficulties and kids who are gifted.

These disabilities varies from children to children- some may enjoy a normal life if a proper medical care is provided to them; others may need lifelong care to lead a healthy life.Parental support and support from the community is needed by the kids who have some special needs. There are schools and educational institutes also where these children can get professional help to improve their condition. Peers and family members do play a vital role in helping these children to cure from their disabled condition.

Normal people like us may not realize this need, but it should be our responsibility to provide proper love and affection to the especially able kids. Parents of special kids can admit them into some special programs designed to cure these kids. All of us benefit from a community life where all are welcome, regardless of ability. The lessons of tolerance and appreciation of differences are lessons we can all use from time to time, regardless of our ages!
