One of the most common reasons that many people give for not being able to stick to a training regime is that they find themselves without the time or the motivation to travel all the way to another location for their workout, or the money they need to sign up to a gym. After a long day at work, the last thing you want to do is to get changed, travel miles in your car, go to the gym, shower with loads of other customers, then drive back cold and wet having spent your money and taken up most of your evening. If the weather outside is bad then this is only exacerbated.

The solution? Work out from home. By buying loads of your own equipment you can do a workout in half the time, in the warm and dry, and without spending a penny over your initial investment in equipment. Many people think that they don’t have the space necessary to make a home gym, or that it would cost a lot of money to be able to kit themselves up as much as necessary, and this is largely why so many quit rather than simply relocate.

The reality however is very different and you really needn’t break the bank to have everything you need for a complete and varied workout. And space wise it should mostly be able to fit under your bed – at least to start with.

The thing is you don’t need to have tonnes of pieces of equipment right away, to begin with you can start light and then increase the equipment as time goes on. This means there’s not much of an investment and you won’t waste lots of money and find you’re not actually using it.

Once your home gym is set up you will be able to workout without having to travel anywhere and it will take half as long. On a cold tired evening you can pump out just a few bicep curls before bed without having to head out – and it’ll take you less than two minutes. Furthermore, you can do this while watching a film, listening to your most inspiring music, or even while working between sets.

For this reason, anyone wanting to start a training regime but struggling to find time, motivation and money, would do well to set up a home gym. Even for those who go to the gym regularly, having a home gym as well can be a great way to ensure that you never miss a set, and that you can increase your routine by squeezing in extra sessions when you find you have the energy (capitalising on energy surges is incredibly important if you want to be successful).

To set up your home gym then, simply find a spare room, or some space in another room (you can store the equipment when it’s not being used, but you should also have space to use it when you need to). Next buy some starter pieces – just some dumbbells to begin with, and some protein shake and supplements. Then you are officially the proud owner of your own home gym.
