Cottage Maintenance—Tips for the Cottage Owners - By: Allan Michael Taylor

If you have a cottage in the countryside or in a rural area where your family usually go on holidays or on vacations, you probably know how important it is to take care of your property. Nothing is more upsetting than starting your vacation cleaning and fixing the cottage where you and your family are planning to stay for the holidays. That is why it is important and it is your responsibility as a cottage owner to know some tips on how to maintain and care for your cottage.

But before you read about some useful cottage maintenance tips, you should first know what a cottage is. Sure, you probably use the word when referring to your home away from home but what is it exactly? A cottage is a house that is usually situated in a rural area or in a country side. It is usually a traditional house made of traditional materials like wood or stone. However, these days, you can also find cottages in the cities or urban areas, though they are still more popular in the rural area. Since most cottages are made using traditional materials, it is even more important for you to know some cottage maintenance tips. Below are some of the things that you need to know and do if you own a cottage.

- Make sure that you have the right tools for the task of cleaning and repairing your cottage. You should have a tool kit and invest in good quality tools that you can keep in your cottage. You should stock up on the basic tools such as screwdrivers, hammer, wrench, saw, nails, pliers, and so on. You also need electrical supplies and tools. It is also important to keep extra light bulbs, fuses, faucets, and other things that you might need to replace. Having a complete set of tools will ensure that no matter what kind of emergency happens while you are staying in your cottage, you can be sure that you can try to repair it using your own tools.

- One important cottage maintenance tip is to keep the floors clean at all times. If you have young children, cleaning a carpeted floor is a nightmare. Try to prevent dirt on the floor by placing mats on the entrance and making sure that your children leave their dirty shoes or slippers outside. You can use indoor slippers, socks, or booties if you want.

- The skeleton of your house is the walls. Make sure that you keep them safe and protected. If you can find widening cracks on your walls, have an expert look at it to prevent further damage. Peeling paint or wall paper is not very attractive but it does not pose any danger to your cottage. Pay closer attention to the major damages first before you repair these small problems.

- You should also check the roof. Make sure that the roof is still good for rainy days or winter season. Patch the holes as soon as possible and repaint the roof if necessary.
