Costume Idea for Ogres - By: Goldie Thoimpson

This past year, my husband came up with a great and cost effective costume idea for Halloween. Most of the time when I was growing up, I dressed as a ghost with an old sheet and eyeholes cut out. Sometimes I was a hobo wearing some of my Dad's old work clothes and my Mother's eyeliner drawn on my face as soot. Since I've become an adult, I've enjoyed a little more creativity in Halloween costumes.

My husband and I decided to go as Shrek and Fiona to this year's Halloween party. This costume was simple. It was also very cost effective. We purchased most of the items needed from Goodwill or the craft store. It was also the first time we ever won a costume contest.

I found a solid green dress at the Goodwill store and transformed it into a dress for Princess Fiona. I added a green long-sleeved shirt under the dress to eliminate the need to color my arms green. I bought some gold trim at the craft store. I hot glued the trim to the dress to give it the style of a princess.

Shrek was attired in an inexpensive pair of lounge pants the color of brown. His vest was crafted from a brown sweatshirt also found at Goodwill. To for the vest, I removed the arms and cut out the neck. I then split the shirt up the middle and glued on some leather ties he found in his workshop. Underneath the vest, he wore a simple, white, long-sleeved t-shirt.

To create ogre ears, I used green felt and covered two head bands. With a sheet of green foam board found at the craft store, I drew the shape of the ears. Shrek had long, narrow ears and Princess Fiona had short, wide ears. After cutting each one out, I rolled the ear and sealed the edge with hot glue. The ears were then secured to the felt-covered headbands.

I picked up some green and white face paint and mixed them together to achieve the color required for an ogre. I then covered each of our faces and necks with the face paint. We didn't worry about our hands, but if you don't plan on touching anything for the evening, you can also paint your hands. I then applied glitter eye shadow, and bright red lipstick. Not on my husband, only on myself.

The final touches involved picking up a crown at our local party store. I used an inexpensive tiara that was intended to be used as party favors for a child's birthday party. The tiara I found was silver, so I spray painted it gold, although the silver would have worked as well.

With just a little work, and very little investment, this costume idea transformed my husband and me into Shrek and Fiona. My husband grabbed his grog, and we were off to our party in our economical costumes. We were certainly one of the favorites at the party this year.
