Controlling Anxiety Symptoms On A Night Out - By: NathanT

You met someone you like and now you're going out for dinner and out of nowhere, anxiety symptoms start. Your heart is racing and your palm and forehead is sweaty. You feel jittery and unable to breathe properly. Most people get a bit anxious meeting a person that they're attracted to. However when anxiety constantly gets the better of you it can make daily life difficult to deal with.

A person who regularly experiences anxiety symptoms can lose all confidence in themselves. Because of this it can be difficult to meet people and build friendships. When an anxious person with low self-assurance meets someone they're attracted to, they immediately have thoughts of rejection and unworthiness. Playing it too cool and showing disinterest are common self-protective actions that they might take.

A person who is highly anxious can be off-putting for their date and be hard to read. Eye contact can be hard to make for them and they might seem clumsy. In an attempt to evade humiliation they might put distance between themselves and their date. All of these self sabotaging thoughts and actions inevitably lead to sabotage of a date and they'd be lucky if they ever get a call back.

It's attractive to be confident but not the smarmy salesman kind. There are some confident people who just look relaxed and comfortable in their own skin without having to try. If you're anxious all the time however it might indicate an anxiety disorder. Social phobia and Generalized Anxiety Disorder are two very common anxiety disorders that can severely affect a person's ability to build relationships.

Long term sufferers of anxiety disorders are at a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. There are literally 100s of anxiety symptoms so one case is likely to differ from another. Although under recognized, treatments for anxiety disorders are available. Therapy such as CBT combined with anxiety medication can help treat or reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Not everyone is confident and some are just timid in nature and more introvert. It's surprisingly easy to acquire confidence however with a few simple techniques. In time anyone can learn to become more confident. Read lots of self help books, get tips from friends and start adopting the lifestyle and behaviors of the person you want to be. Think of someone that is confident and strong in your eyes and try to adopt their behavior.

When you next have a date and anxiety symptoms start, avoid trying to fight the sensations. Notice the sensations, accept them, and let them pass naturally. Relax and focus on inhaling deeply and slowly. Avoid negative self talk and remember that your date could just be as nervous as you are. If the date turns out bad, think about how you can improve for the next one.
