Constipation is a common problem during pregnancy. Up to half of pregnant women suffer from constipation at some point.

One reason is the increase of progesterone, a hormone that relaxes smooth muscles throughout the body including the gastrointestinal tract. This means that the passage of food through the intestine more slowly. And the problem can be compounded at the end of pregnancy by the pressure of the uterus on the rectum. Iron supplements, particularly at high doses can worsen constipation.
What causes constipation during pregnancy?

In general, concern, anxiety, minimal physical exercise and a diet low in fiber can cause constipation. Constipation during pregnancy is believed to occur due to hormones that relax the intestinal muscles and increasing pressure from the uterus on the intestine. This muscle relaxation causes the food to the intestines and waste more slowly into your system.

When constipation is severe?
