Constipation is a symptom, not a disease. Almost everyone experience constipation at some point in their life, and a poor diet typically is the cause.

Most constipation is temporary and not serious. Understanding its causes, avoidance, and treatment will help most people find relief.

Medical definition of constipation is “fewer than three bowels travel a week.” Normal bowel movement pattern is one bowel movement per day.

However less than 50% of people have this kind of perfect bowel movement. Most of the people have between 3 and 21 bowel movements per day which is quite a normal condition.

Not everyone can go to the toilet every day. Constipation is usually considered to constitute less than three stools per week. Action is warranted if the feces are hard and the mass departure irregular and painful.

In Western Europe, the most everyday reason for constipation is insufficient filling of the bowel as a result of a low-fibre diet; in Switzerland, for instance, the usual daily intake of dietary fibre is only about 20 g instead of the ideal 30 g.

Further contributory factors can be an inadequate liquid intake, lack of exercise, a hectic lifestyle and stress.
