Constipation is not a issue we like to talk about openly, except maybe our medical practitioner, in hopes they can help fix the problem.  Have you ever heard about Elvis Presley or Wayne Newton having over 30 lbs of by-product waste in their bodies upon death?    Unfortunately, that's not a rare thing in today's "over-processed foods" world where a healthy diet plan is difficult to come by.

In fact over $700 million are spent each year in America on laxatives.  Becoming older is certainly not kind to the bowels as constipation tends to get bad with age.  We should be having 2-3 bowel actions each day to keep our bowels in tip top shape. So what causes this and how can we prevent it from affecting our lifestyles and weight loss goals?

Some of the main causes of constipation are:

1) Lack of hearty diet.  Too many nutrient deficient processed foods
2) Lack of hydration.  Water really keeps the body moving!
3) Lack of healthy fats
4) Stress
5) Sedentary lifestyle

One of the first steps in helping to boost your ability to produce healthy bowel movements is increasing foods that are high in fiber to your healthy diet plan.  Fruits and vegetables, as well as beans and yogurts high in probiotics.  Make sure to choose high fiber fruits, such as apples and kiwis.  Bananas should be avoided as they are used to help treat those with diarrhea.    If you're still having issues with constipation even when adding many high fibered foods to your diet, you should look into introducing a supplement to your plan.  Stay away from laxatives.  They're a short-term fix that can wreak havoc on your system.   Fiber comes in powder or pill form and your best bet is to find a reputable brand, that contains both soluble and insoluble fiber, from a health food convenience store you know and trust.  I'd highly recommend you add a daily probiotic to your diet program as it will do wonders for the flora in your gut.

Water and fiber go hand in hand.  Even with a diet full of supplements and high fiber foods, your colon won't operate to its full potential if you're not drinking enough water to help keep the body in motion.

Essential fatty acids (good fats) really help to lubricate your bowels, which essentially creates an efficient elimination process.

The bottom line, you shouldn't turn to quick fixes, like laxatives, if you suffer constipation. Consider of constipation as a symptom of an unhealthy way of eating. The good news is if you do all the things to help you resolve the issue there will be a myriad of otherbenefits that come with eating well and losing weight fast. You'll have more energy. You'll lose excess weight. You'll reduce the risk of long-term health illnesses. The list goes on and on.
