The United Nations has reported that more than 15,000 people have been raped in eastern region of the Congo in the past year. This is according to the post recent data that is available, says an envoy from the United Nations that is in the African nation.

Roger Meece, who is the head of United Nations peacekeeping mission, stated, "the scale of the security problems in the east, including sexual attacks, is enormous." Rebel militias are massively raping in the eastern Congo's mineral-rich Walikale region. He said the rapes occurred in late July and early August. This proofs that more protection is needed for the civilians.
After his briefing he said it is impossible for the 18,000 United Nations peacekeeping forces to protect all the civilians in an area that is larger than Afghanistan and where there are armed groups are operating. Meece said, "The U.N. cannot serve as the complete answer to the security problems of the east, the scale of the problem is enormous."

The Population Fund, which collects data, reported that sexual violence hasn't slowed down in the Congo in the first half of this year. There were 7,685 attacks in the first six months. Another indication that furthers to support this data is more than 15,000 sexual-violence survivors have had to have medical care. This care comes for the special protection units' establishment for women and children in the Kivus and Kasai Oriental province in the south-central Congo. Equally troubling figures that were provided by the Population Fund was that 17,507 sexual-violence attacks occurred in all of Congo in 2009, these figures included more than 9,000 in the North and South Kivu, they have been in the center of the conflict in the east.

The Congolese army in the Walikale region are under way to fight against the Mai-Mai militia group and rebels from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Rwanda. Meece said he didn't know whether the soldiers were involved in any rapes.
