During the first half of the twentieth century Psychology walked in two directions markedly different and isolated. On the one hand, behavioral targeting, objectivist, mechanistic and positivist. On the other hand, the group psychology which originated with Freud and psychoanalysis. However, these two schools had in common a basic principle of human nature that influence the conceptual framework and research methods and interpretation of subsequent findings: determinism. If for some behavior was interpreted as a quasi-automatic process and mechanical, stimulated by the external environment (focus reagent ), for others it was a product triggered by internal impulses (focus depth reagent).
The physical methodological model was already considered inadequate in the 50's by distinguished physicists such as Heisenberg (1974) and Oppenheimer (1956), psychologists who advised her not to model a science of physics already outdated and unable to help understand the phenomena mentally, in which the human mind comes as object and subject of the scientific process, and we noted the desirability of advocating for pluralism in methodology to include naturalistic and descriptive methods.
Stimulated and unsatisfied with this series of inconsistencies, was born and has developed a "Third Force" in Psychology the Humanistic Psychology, which shows different facets of protest, of defiance, complementary, alternative or extension of the other two streams, Behavioral Psychology and Psychoanalysis. Humanistic Psychology accepted models and analogies of the other two streams as legitimate guides for certain areas of research, but not considered an adequate description of human beings and less support to be elevated to the status of dogma, as it often has been.
The humanist movement, rather than a school, a new orientation towards Psychology, A way of thinking about man and the whole scientific enterprise that alter the image we have of human beings and free Psychology various restrictions imposed artificial theories that are now listed as obsolete. No one can say that the major proponents of this approach, Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, Gordon Allport, Charlotte Buhler, Rollo May, Viktor Frankl, Wilhelm Dilthey, Edward Spranger, William Stern, Kurt Lewin, Kurt Goldstein, Gardner Murphy, Erich Fromm , Fritz Perls, Eric Berne, as well as a number of other psychologists today- have a common basic ideology, but they and other humanistic psychologists sympathetic or share many positions held by Psychology of Gestalt, the Psi Adlerian psychology, the Jungian, Neo-Freudian, Psychologyego ,the Fenomenológica, the Existential The "Self-theory" the Transactional and proactivity.
Following and integrating ideas the Association Humanistic Psychology, we can point out four as the most typical features in the most representative authors in counseling:

1. A focus on the conscious human experience as a primary phenomenon unavoidable when studying humans. Theoretical explanations and external behavior are considered later, and secondary to the experience itself and to the significance of this to the person.
2. An emphasis on qualities as deeply human as choice, creativity, evaluation and self-realization, as opposed to thinking about human beings in mechanistic and reductionist terms.
3. Fidelity to the "meaning and value" when selecting problems for study and research, and opposition to the emphasis on objectivity at the expense of methodological significance.
4. Particularly appreciative of the dignity and value of human being and interest in developing the potential inherent in every person.
