Computer Repair: How to speed up your computer - By: Felicity Lightbody

As technology continues to advance, it is becoming more of an asset on our lives. The computer is one of the most used products of today's technology. However, many individuals do not know how to effectively use their computer. The primary purpose of this article is to show how to increase the speed and performance of your computer.

Overloaded and slow computers are a widespread occurrence today, as software downloads increases. When people download too much unnecessary software, it hampers the performance of their computers. An excess of irrelevant programs on a computer uses more resources and more RAM (memory). Nevertheless, the applications that are most damaging are the ones that start during start up. When a computer is starting up, it uses a lot of memory and resources to start the core functions of the operating system. When a program starts during startup, the overall startup process slows down substantially. Some computers takes over 20 minutes to start, as a result of a bogged down start up. The best thing to do is to prevent irrelevant programs and application from starting up during start up in the first place. The following paragraph will show you how to easily do this. By doing this, the performance of your PC will increase significantly.

In order to disable unnecessary programs and applications from starting during start, you have to go to the windows configuration utility. The windows configuration utility is codenamed "msconfig". In order to use the windows configuration utility on Windows XP, drag your mouse to the bottom left part of your screen, and click the start button. The start button will show a list programs and items. Next, click on the icon that says "run"; it is usually at the bottom part of the start menu. Once the "run" application has started, type "msconfig" and press enter. Select diagnostic startup if you want to disable all applications from running during startup. Selecting diagnostic startup will cause better performance. If however you do not want to disable all programs, go under the "startup" tab. You will then see a list of all programs that start during startup. You will also have the option to disable any program you want. If you have Windows Vista, you don't have to use "run" to access the configuration utility; just type "msconfig" on the search bar in the start menu.
