Common Ways Of Defeating Anxiety - By: Karen Larsen

In today's world, it is not all that unusual for a person to have an anxiety attack. The problem is when the incidences of these attacks become such a regular phenomenon that they become an impediment to you living a good life.

If you happen to be one of the people who suffer from anxiety, how do you overcome it? The first step is to learning to recognize that you actually have anxiety. So many people are not in touch with their real inner feelings that they can go for years without realizing that they have anxieties. They have been living for so many years with these feelings that it seems normal to them.

As an example, assume that a person has had trouble sleeping for his entire life. Since this is a state that is perfectly normal to him, it may never occur to him that his insomnia is related to his anxiety. Likewise, a person who is perpetually depressed, may continue in that state for years, never realizing that his anxieties are the cause of his depression.

In addition, it can often be helpful to understand that there are different types of anxiety. Not all anxiety has the same cause. And, therefore, the treatment for all of them will not be the same. To take a common example. Some people are afraid of water, and they have been afraid of it their entire. And, as a consequence, they find ways of avoiding all kinds of potentially fun activities that take place in or around water. In many cases, this is an anxiety caused by a prior childhood experience in which they almost drowned. And they remember that experience.

On the flip side, not all panic attacks are related to prior experience. Researchers have now shown that anxiety and panic attacks can actually run in some families. In families such as these, a genetic component is the cause for the anxiety. And the treatment, or cure, for overcoming anxiety in these two very different circumstances may be entirely different.

Because researchers have been working with anxiety for years, they have developed a number of treatments. As it happens, the most common means of overcoming anxiety are therapy, medications, or a combination of the two. It should come as no surprise that in American society, the use of medications is a particularly alluring treatment choice. In fact, many times, especially if you haven't taken drugs before, the first few times can give you such a feeling of euphoria and drop your anxiety levels to such an extent that you feel that you have found the perfect remedy.

It's not too long, however, until you discover that the drug, instead of being a cure, has become a crutch. And this is how so many people end up being hooked on medications.

The responsible thing to do is to only used drugs in combination with therapy so that your therapist can monitor your reactions to the drugs as well as to help you to understand the real reasons behind your anxieties and help you to rid yourself of them.
