Common Types of Restaurant Insurance - By: Jenna Jones

If you have a restaurant or are thinking about buying or setting up your own restaurant, then you should start thinking about one of the most basic requirements which could protect you, the business, the employees and the customers – restaurant insurance.

There are several types of restaurant insurance policies which you could take out but it would really depend on the restaurant location as well as any bank loans you may have or mortgages you may have taken out to set it up.

Automobile Liability is an insurance your restaurant needs if you have vehicles which the restaurant may rely on. Should your business be involved in making deliveries or mobile catering services, then you need the vehicle liability or automobile liability insurance for restaurants.

Employee liability or worker’s compensation is a protection for both the restaurant and the employees. This is usually required if your restaurant has at least five employees but is not required if there are less. However, employee claims can be a liability to the uninsured business, irrespective of the justification, and it would be a good idea to get the policy to protect the restaurant from having to pay for costs involving medical emergencies or health emergencies which can occur when working on the job.

General liability is the umbrella policy for all businesses like restaurants that cater for customers. A customer can slip on the restaurant floor, they could get food poisoning or they could sustain an injury because of a spillage on the kitchen floor or an accident using the equipment on the restaurant premises. There are many instances whereby a liability claim can be initiated, even when you are not at fault. Many people are litigious nowadays and there is no way to avoid them, all you can do is protect yourself with insurance.

Life Insurance is necessary for those who took out a loan to finance the restaurant. It is important for the borrower to take out a life insurance to protect the family should something happen to them. This will cover the loans and any other financing that was used for the business.

Property insurance is the policy that will protect the property of the restaurant and its equipments from water damage or fires. There are some policies that do not cover natural disasters so it would be a good idea to look into the policies available to check out the differences of what or what are not covered.
