Common Plumbing Problems to Watch Out For - By: Businesslocallistings

Plumbing is one of the main things that most homeowners view as a necessity rather than a luxury. As a result, when plumbing problems occur and things stop running smoothly, homeowners panic. Home plumbing repair is one of the most common and frustrating issues we must face at some point, however, knowing how to fix basic leaks and clogs can save money and unnecessary frustration. According to the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Information Bureau, the following are some of the most common home plumbing repair problems:

Leaking water heaters—sadly, the only way to fix this leak is to replace the pipes. Leaks on your water heater often means severe rusting that reaches down to the storage tank so it’s best to get new ones. Once the storage tank goes, then there’s no way of getting it back with its old parts.

Running toilets—usually indicated by a low humming noise or if the toilet continues running into the bowl after the toilet has been flushed. Running toilets usually suggest that some part of the toilet is out of order. When this happens, shut off the water source found under the toilet and call the plumber. You might have to replace some of the parts but the cost is generally inexpensive.

Toilet leaks—one of the most frustrating and potentially expensive home plumbing repair problems. Leaking toilets can add more than $100 to one’s annual water bill. To repair a toilet leaks, sometimes simply jiggling the flushing handle can fix the problem. For issues in which this is not the case, however, it may be necessary to call a professional plumber.

Clogged Drains—this can be avoided with one simple step: Be careful with what you pour down the drain especially in the kitchen sink. If you’re really careless, try getting a drain strainer so any large chunks you pour down are sifted. All you have to do is take out the strainer and throw the sifted stuff in the trash.

Faucet Leaks—leaving leaky faucets causes you a lot of money in the long run. Leaks have been proven to be the cause of the 4% increase in your water bill. Save your plumbing fixtures by gently turning them off, avoiding turning the knobs so hard when you’re done using them.

Pipe Leaks—this is a plumbing problem that can cause extensive damage to your floors, walls, and belongings. To prevent a small leak from worsening, it is a good idea to check pipes regularly for rust or white lime deposits that indicate the beginnings of a leak.

No heat—this is a problem that branches out into other heating and plumbing annoyances. Avoidance of this plumbing problem should start way before the cold season comes is. Check the heating system to make sure it is working properly, i.e. there are no leaks, clogs, broken pipes, etc. Now, this often a job for the plumber because it involves looking at parts not everyone is familiar with. For those who have a gas water heater with a pilot light, make sure the light is on. Ask the plumber is the temperature setting on the water heater is set high enough to provide enough hot water for the entire house. For newly built or renovated houses, you usually need to check if the existing water heater’s size to make sure it can provide enough warm water. Old plumbing can sometimes cause problems without you realizing it.
