We hear a lot about the growing epidemic of diabetes amongst pets. In turn, many people will choose a suitable pet diet for their puppy or cat and think that this will keep them healthy and happy all their life. However, whilst diabetes is becoming a massive problem, it is still at the very bottom of the list of the ten most common diseases found amongst pets. Therefore, just because you have a slim and healthy looking pet, this doesn’t always mean they are as well as you think.

Dental disease is a big one, and whilst a good pet diet can help this to a certain extent, many other precautions may need to be taken. Dental disease can have a major affect on the kidneys, liver and even the heart, and therefore ensuring that you do your best to avoid the problem is going to be vital. Getting a vet to regularly check the oral health of your puppy or cat once they are over the age of three can make a huge difference. It is also important to clean your pets teeth regularly, and occasionally even have them professionally cleaned.

The other main issues affecting pets are worms and ear infections. Both are common to both cats and dogs and both can go unnoticed for a long time if you don’t look into having annual veterinary checkups at the very least.

Many pet owners do not realise their pets are ill simply because they don’t pay enough attention to changes in energy levels and even mood, expecting more physical symptoms to manifest themselves when their pets are ill. The right food is vital to your pets, but checkups are also going to be extremely necessary. Many cats do not ever receive the right medical care, simply because their owners are unaware of the underlying conditions that they may have.
