Coming Across My Old Ceramic Money Box in the Attic - By: Mr Robert

Most people would describe their childhood as a magical time with no greater stresses than worrying about getting their homework finished and thinking about what was for dinner that day. I know that there are millions of children who suffer from neglect and abuse and these children often turn into unhappy and depressed adults, but that is a subject for a different article. For now I wish to share with you the thoughts that crossed my mind last week as I came across my old ceramic money box in the attic of my parent’s house.

My parents had decided that they wished to convert the attic into a spare room so that their grandchildren could have a play room in which they could store all their toys and games and where it would not matter if there was a constant mess. We all liked the idea and my father asked us to come round and help to clear out the years of accumulated possessions from the attic before work could begin. I, along with my siblings arranged to get together and see which things we wished to keep and generally organise all the things which had been stuffed up there for years.

The whole job took us longer than it should have because we spent so much time discussing and reminiscing about the various things which we found up there, especially the things which we recalled from our childhood. Our parents have saved a lot of the “treasures” which we had collected as children and we enjoyed looking at all the old pits and pieces such as funny shaped rocks, shiny stones, shells and all the things which children think need to be saved. There was also all the old pictures, sculptures and birthday cards and presents which had been saved by our loving parents and which we would now show to our own children.

Amongst these things we came across the old ceramic money boxes which our grandmother had gifted to us all on our seventh birthdays and which still contained some old coins in them from our attempts at saving money. They were all unique pieces and had our names on them to make them even more special. These days children tend to be given money whenever they ask for it rather than having a fixed allowance, but we were given a certain amount of pocket money and were expected to make it last. This was to teach us the value of money and the ceramic money boxes were a way of teaching us how to manage our money and learn to save.

There are so many different types of money boxes and they come in all shapes and sizes including animals and cupcakes but all will teach a child about responsibility. My old ceramic money box has now been passed carefully to my youngest child and I hope that he will appreciate it and in turn will come to love it as I did in my childhood.
