Collective Thoughts - By: jackauthors

So many of us enjoy collecting things. It may be coins, stamps, records, football programmes or Children’s books. And some people will take pride in amassing far more unusual items such as beer mats, match boxes, bottle tops or mugs. Just why we insist on collecting these things is all a bit of a mystery. Perhaps it is simply a way of hoarding items that we deem as being precious in some strange way.

But it would seem that collecting has been a popular pastime for many hundreds of years. Butterflies, bird’s eggs and insects have all been treasured by people over the years. Ancient tribes would even collect their own nail cuttings and milk teeth! This may not be very appealing to most people today, but it shows us that our obsession with keeping particular objects is certainly nothing new.

Some specific items are also collected by a number of people. If you were to have a love for American comics of the 1970s, then you would have no trouble at all finding likeminded people. This could be very useful if you were trying to track down a few certain issues as you may find someone willing to do you a swap. Likewise, for anyone collecting film memorabilia, there are plenty of conventions to attend. These can be a great way of finding new items for your collection and of meeting other movie buffs.

Collectors may have been indulging in their strange compulsion for a good many years, but there has never been a better time than the present. Since the advent of the internet, it has become so much easier to hunt out any elusive items. Autographed cricket balls, first editions of Children’s books and rare picture discs of music singles can all be found online.

Perhaps the internet is actually taking some of the joy out of collecting. Surely it was far more rewarding for a collector to track down an obscure item after spending years of hunting around? Can it really be as satisfying to find your holy grail within a few minutes of searching through an online auction?

Well, the internet can’t have made it that boring for collectors. You certainly never hear anyone complaining about how simple it is to find what they are looking for, do you? The reality is, that it will be more likely that people will spend yet more of their time and money building an even larger collection of items than they would have done before!

If you like the idea of collecting something, then there are a few practicalities to consider... How large an item are you thinking of? Obviously a collection of cigarette cards will take up far less space than a collection of electro-acoustic guitars. You need to bear this in mind or your hobby will take over your home. Price is another important factor. Don’t start collecting something that you cannot afford to buy! Not only will your finances suffer, but you will also feel frustrated when you are unable to add to your collection.

The final thing to think about is tolerance... If you are living on your own then this is not a problem. However, if you have a partner then it is very wise to talk to them about your idea before you even start. This could help avoid a whole lot of arguments later on!
