Collecting Beswick Horses - By: Efrain Wagner

Moving on inside 1930s to creating animal ornaments, which started with racehorse ornaments, the business then moved on to comedic figurines of animals in human circumstances.

Made from porcelain, the Beswick pieces were hand-painted earthenware and are even more sought after today, as they are no longer in production. The company didn't stop using gorgeous and beautiful collectible figurines. In 1948 Beswick dojos gained the rights to Beatrix Potter, a really popular uk bunny bunnie. These Beatrix Potter collectible figurines soon became hugely popular and they started reproducing every character possible from Beswick Jemima Puddle ducks on the obvious Peter Rabbit Figurine.

You may catch a quality Beswick animal available at a boot sale if your good at spotting Beswick items. These figurines are typically according to cartoon animals and are definitely the height of animal porcelain figurine fashion. They cover a sizable range of themes, mostly animals encompassing Beatrix Potter Beswick figurines, cartoon character figurines and naturally the superb horse range.

There are lately many grey Beswick rocking horses available as very collectible items so get in there quick as they are not made anymore and for that reason will undoubtedly increase in value as will other items now not in production by their original owners.

Collectors of porcelain figurines will be familiar with the wide range of stamps as used by manufacturers to mark their work. Sometimes referred to as 'stamps' or 'backstamps', these marks are generally found on the underside of the figurine and will always include the identity of the manufacturer at minimum.

John Beswick implemented this practice at his Beswick factory and the range of marks or stamps that can be found on Beswick pieces give a pivotal insight into both this provenance and value with the piece itself.

One vital question that sometimes rears its ugly head with Beswick figurines is whether the lack of a mark or stamp on the underside indicates that it is not a genuine bit. The answer to this is certainly no. There are a multitude of Beswick figurines in circulation that do not have a mark at all and the Beswick factory was well known for unfinished pieces, particularly on a Friday afternoon!

The earlier Beswick stamps, dating from soon after the First World Warfare, take the form of a simple circle or oval shape formed by way of the words 'Beswick England'. You may also find the name of the trend used. Beswick wares were extremely popular in England and abroad being one of the finest ranges available, although they achieved remarkable success with highly specialised facial lines including life-like models, grave and gay, equestrian characters, dogs modelled from well-known prize-winners, birds in excellent variety, wild and domestic animals, fish, toby jugs, salad ware and cottage ware including not surprisingly, the Beatrix Potter collection.

By June 1989, the decision was taken for all Beswick to be produced beneath the Royal Doulton backstamp, withdrawing grey and palomino matt colours in the horses colourways and not many continue to be available in gloss.

On some figures of Royal Doulton they enjoy the mark Beswick Ware and you should find that these do not fetch as much money as the original Beswick for obvious reasons.

However, the figurines still charm many and Seen they will for many years to come.
