Cognition Fibro Fog & Fibromyalgia - By: Cheryl Stephenson

"Sometimes my brain won't put the words in my mouth; there are times I can't get my point across even saying very simple things." Cheryl Stephenson - Fibromyalgia Patient

Do you suffer with what most people call Fibromyalgia brain fog? Or 'fibro fog'? Here are some of the many symptoms of fibro fog:
1.Can't find your car keys when you go to leave your house?
2.Have you ever tried to explain something and couldn't find the words?
3.Have you ever put the milk in the cupboard and the dry cereal in the icebox?
4.Go to take your medicine and can't remember if you've already taken it?
5.Shown up for a doctor's appointment on the wrong day at the wrong time?
6.Entered a room to get something and forgot why you walked in there?
7.Forgot an important date or birthday?
8.Can't remember your best friend's name when you go to introduce them?
9.Mess up your checkbook; can never balance?
10.Lack of concentration at work prevents you from focusing on your work.
11.Do you feel like you're crazy and losing it?

Brain fog is caused by physical symptoms, not psychological ones. This is an important fact to remember.

How do doctors treat Brain Fog to give you clarity? Most physicians use different therapies for your particular needs and they watch to see how you respond to those therapies or treatment. Some of the treatments include:

1.Thyroid supplements can have a profound positive effect for those with hypothyroidism or thyroid resistance. Along with hypothyroidism, there is a familial disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis,(also called autoimmune or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis), most common in the US; in my case I have both. This condition is about 7 times more common in women than men, and affects approximately 14 million Americans. The results of a malfunction in the immune system can be from Hashimoto's thyroiditis. When working properly, the immune system is designed to protect the body against invaders, such as bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances. Someone with Hashimoto's thyroiditis has an immune system that mistakingly recognizes normal thyroid cells as foreign tissue, thus producing antibodies that may destroy these cells. Although various environmental factors have been studied, none have been positively proven to be the cause of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Additionally, the optimization of other hormones simultaneously will help to resolve this issue.

2.Restful sleep is essential and doctors have a number of methods to help you to achieve restorative sleep. Since the age of 19, when I was diagnosed with FMS, restorative sleep is and was my ultimate goal in life; just to get a good night's sleep so I could function the next day, but I usually slept like a cat with one eye open. I've never felt restored after waking up, I've always felt like I just went to bed.

3.Prescription medications such as Provigil and Adderall may help to improve your focus as well as your concentration.

4.There are some nutritional supplements that help brain fog specifically. These can be very helpful. To improve your concentration, what else can you do?

5.You need more sleep. A regular sleep routine is best. It's important to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Limit your intake of caffeine as well as food near bedtime. A comfortable mattress makes all the difference in a good night's sleep. I purchased a "Ewe" mattress to place on top of my new mattress, and the softness truly helps getting comfortable and maintaining that restorative sleep I desire.

6.Remain active. Keep your mind active with memory enhancers, such as network marketing for example, LOL, puzzles or games. It is very important to maintain a routine of moderate exercise to keep your body active. Activity increases your energy and it will help clear the brain fog.

7.Take notes. In order to keep track of things, you need to write them down and keep a notebook. Do this to keep track of things you may forget.

8.Get medical treatment. You need to decide to get treatment for your Fibromyalgia. Please be true to yourself and get treatment for your condition. It's much harder for you to concentrate with symptoms such as pain, depression, and lack of sleep. Brain fog can make it worse. Getting the normal YOU back, is most essential.

Remember, if you are suffering with fibro fog, you are not alone. Even though many would beg to differ, brain fog is not a psychological condition. Many physicians can help you reduce your brain fog, and can help and assist you.
