Cleaning Your House Now is Time to Organizing the Basement - Garage, Attic or Storage Space - By: Jerri Voteur

How much valuable time have you spent trying to organize or clean storage places like the garage or the attic? At the end of the day, you find yourself frustrated, distressed and still not as organized as you would like to be? The answer is to do it right the first time?

It doesn't matter what kind of storage place you are trying to tackle. It might be the garage, the basement, the storage shed or wherever you decide to put the things that you don't use every day. If you can't find the room to put everything where they need to go, this is something that we can change for you right away.

Head to the area in question and take a long look at it. Is there a path that you have to travel, cut into the things that lie on the floor? When was the last time that this space was really useful to you and not an annoyance? If you can't remember this, it's time to get to work.

First, shall we start with the floors? Even if they are nearly impassable, we can still make progress, but it might be in baby steps. The first step is going to be to get rid of the trash. You may need a bin or just a lot of bags; just start gathering it up. If there is anything you are unsure about, set it aside for another member of your family. If no one knows about, it is time to get tough and to toss it.

Trust me, it's not easy, but it needs to get done.

As you sort, make two piles. The first is a pile to keep, and the second one is a pile to sell. One great way to do this is to use old large sheets for this sorting. You will find that you need to figure out what you can't live without and love, while making sure that you get rid of what you don't want. The more you venture through these things, the more you will realize that you don't need all of it, not even a little!

Once the sorting has been done (whew!) it's time to consider storage. Having good shelves in your garage is one way to make sure that you are making use of your space. Just a few brackets and some plywood can open up your space quite a bit and let you get a lot of things off the floor. If you need shelving installed, this is the perfect time to do it. Contact your local lumber store and figure out how much you will need. Plywood that's about half an inch thick can help you a great deal. The brackets can be spaced every two feet, while a wood screw at the edge of the bracket and wood can work quite well for more security.

Hooray! You have shelving! The next logical step is to put things on your shelves. This can be a great area for things for car maintenance that you don't use every day, like oil, soap or antifreeze. It's also a great place for things like gardening or painting supplies, though you can also leave some house goods out here.

Do your kids have bikes that they don't use every day, or that need to be put away for the winter? If so, consider hanging these bikes for the ceiling or installing hooks that let them sit on the wall. The hooks catch the inside of the tire and will let you suspend the bike quite well. You can also store a fertilizer spreader this way and you'll find that once the hooks are up and everything is set up the way it should be, you'll be able to get things out of the way and you'll only have to think about them a few times a year. This is something that is quite important to consider as a storage option.

Okay, the floor is now picked up, but how does it look? This might be a time to find a wet-dry vacuum, also known as a shop-vacuum, and empty out whatever is in the garden. Adding some powdered bug killer to the mix can help you get rid of any vermin that is around there. For instance, there is a powdered Sevin (R) formula that is quite good and it is also approved for our gardens. Once your shop-vacuum is ready, divide your garage floor up into segments. This will let you figure out what you have done and whether you have done it completely. Make sure that you get all the edges and the space where the concrete meets the floor. After it has been sprayed down and looks good, put some liquid bug cleaner down around the perimeter. When you are done, take a break; you deserve it!

When you have rested, take on another segment. This stops you from getting too tired or from wanting to get sloppy. Once you start the job, make sure that you finish it! This will also stop the tires from getting punctured by lose debris and keep you from tracking the outdoors indoors!

Now that your storage unit, garage, or shed is cleaned out, it's ready to invite in some guess! Put your car, your bikes or your equipment inside and make sure that you get all of the benefits from having a car indoors!

That's really all it takes; everything is picked up, organized and right where you need it.
