A job in the cleaning industry can be an excellent part-time or full-time job. Although many people only work in the industry for a few years it can provide a safe, reliable career, as even in times of recession there is always a need for cleaning staff.

A Pool Cleaner is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of swimming pools. Their duties include the removal of hazardous foreign objects and debris from the pool with nets and ensuring that the correct amount of chlorine is put into the water. Pool cleaners must also service the various pumps and vents in and around the pool to ensure that everything is operating, as it should. Pool cleaners may also be asked to drain pools during periods when they are to be closed and arrange for the storage of pool paraphernalia such as ladders and diving boards.

A Hotel Maid’s job is to service the rooms of guests by carrying out cleaning duties such as picking up rubbish, folding clothes and collecting towels and any other laundry needed. Maid’s also replenish the supply of toiletries and other complimentary items and may also be expected to re-stock the mini bar and keep track of how many items the guest has consumed during his or her stay. Hotel maids may also be expected to carry out other tasks such as vacuuming the halls, lobbies and staff-only areas of the hotel. Hotel maids may be required to wear a uniform and must respect a guest’s privacy at all times (e.g. acknowledging “do not disturb signs” left on a guests door).

A Dishwasher is expected to clean the dishes, cooking utensils and cutlery of a bar, café or restaurant. In larger establishments there may be many dishwashers working simultaneously so an ability to work as part of a team is essential. In particularly busy restaurants dishwashers may have to work long shifts to ensure that there is always a fresh supply of cutlery available. Dishwashing is either carried out by hand or with the use of professional-standard machinery.
