A wheelbarrow is a very basic device that can come in handy in a myriad situations. Often used as a gardening tool or in the construction industry, it has three elementary parts: the bin or tray, the handle (or handles), and the wheelbarrow wheels. Common belief has it that the earliest recorded wheelbarrow-like contraption was in China; nevertheless, contemporary research has suggested otherwise, citing Ancient Greece as the place where the wheelbarrow was first used to transport load. Whatever the case may be, early representations provided the standard image of the said device: a tub attached to two handles, with a single wheel in front. This picture of a wheelbarrow has changed through time. Now modifications to any or all of its three parts have yielded a variety of forms that cater to specific users.

There is no single grouping method for wheelbarrows. Some sources claim that wheelbarrows can either fall under the traditional type or a modified type commonly known as a garden cart. A garden cart is different from the conventional wheelbarrow in three ways. The first is that unlike in the usual kind, the tub or bin of the garden cart has flat sides and is not at all contoured. This means that it cannot function as a device to pour things from. The second difference lies in the handle. The common wheelbarrow often has two handles, and is meant to be pushed. On the other hand, the garden cart usually has one handle with either a perpendicular or horizontal bar, or a loop at the end. It is often pulled, not pushed. The third difference lies in the wheelbarrow wheels. Typical wheelbarrows have a single wheel attached to the front of the bin; the garden cart, in contrast , often has two or four wheelbarrow tyres. In this classification, then, all devices composed of the three parts mentioned which cannot be classified as garden carts are wheelbarrows.

Others maintain that wheelbarrows can be grouped according to their function – that is, if they are garden wheelbarrows or industrial equipment. The former are often made with both function and aesthetics in mind. As such, most garden wheelbarrows are not only nice to look at, but also very durable. Often, wheelbarrows of this type are made from sturdy polyethylene material or coated steel to avoid rusting; they likewise come in a variety of forms that differ in color or else have embellishments on the handles or on the wheelbarrow wheels, all for decorative purposes. With regard to the latter group, function plays a much more important role than aesthetics. Hence, wheelbarrows used as equipment in construction usually offer very little in terms of appearance. However, what they lack in form they make up for structure. Before, wheelbarrows of this type were made from steel, and as such were not sturdy compared to most garden wheelbarrows, but they get the job done and oftentimes can carry heavier loads. Technology, however, has paved the way for modifications to be made to construction wheelbarrows to make them longer-lasting and heavy-duty. Some of the changes introduced include using galvanized or coated steel for the tub, and puncture proof tyres as wheels.
