Clarifying Issues about QMS Certifications - By: Joshua Green

Are you thinking twice about getting AS9100 certification due to the issues regarding Quality Management System (QMS) accreditations? If yes, then you may be unaware of the basics about accreditations like this. For example, did you know that AS9100 certification is not just for any kind of company? This accreditation caters to companies that manufacture aircrafts and to those that supply aircraft components. Thus, you should only think twice about applying for AS9100 certification if your business has nothing to do with the aircraft industry.

There are a few other issues that need to be clarified regarding AS9100 certification. First, though accreditation is viewed as a marketing strategy by some businessmen, AS9100 certification does more for an aircraft-oriented company than just establish its brand. This accreditation helps companies reestablish their business focus, making it more geared towards customer satisfaction. Moreover, it helps companies continuously improve their operations and aircraft components or units.

Second, there are people who think AS9100 and AS9120 certification are only recognized in certain areas; thus, the effort of getting accredited is not worth it. On the contrary, these QMS certifications are based on the standards of the American Aerospace Quality Group; thus, AS9100 and AS9120 are recognized worldwide. These accreditations just take another name in other areas. For example, AS9100 is commonly known as EN9100 in Europe.

Third, some people think availing these certificates consumes too much time; thus, aircraft industries should not bother getting accredited. However, remember that all kinds of accreditation take a long time due to the three major steps involved: First, QMS objectives have to be reestablished. Second, new procedures based on the objectives have to be implemented. And finally, results have to be reevaluated to establish better objectives and procedures.

Fortunately, there are ways to speed up the application process for AS9100 and AS9120 certification. First, prepare your objectives and compile the necessary documents before contacting the accreditation firm. Second, implement procedures religiously and keep following up the succeeding visits. Doing this would make you aware of the changes that your factory needs to undergo to achieve exceptional aircraft product and service quality.

Finally, skeptics of these accreditation programs may view the certification of quality management systems as an unnecessary expense. In contrast, accreditations are always ongoing to assure that your products and services do not falter when it comes to quality. Thus, your investment would benefit you for many years. Moreover, studies show that companies possessing an AS9100 certification have become more productive.
