Cigarette Joy - By: Brian Byrne

Take a look at the history of cigarettes and tobacco in particular. Mankind came a long way from chewing, dipping, snuffing tobacco to pipe, cigar and finally to cigarette.

There were so many different methods of using tobacco. Each provided a special pleasure different from another. While now it is mostly cigarettes and sometimes cigars that we use. Unlikely there still are people who chew or snuffle it. But even the methods of smoking a cigarette can differ. For example, some cigarette smokers inhale the smoke, the others don't.

Yet there are not too many people who don't like to inhale the smoke, but even this way of smoking gives them a certain pleasure. Maybe their pleasure from smoking is not that intense as of those who do inhale the smoke, like cigar or pipe smoking for instance.

But as a devoted smoker I consider inhalation the main and most important compound of the pleasure we get from cigarettes. When a smoker like me doesn't feel the smoke in his throat it will spoil the whole pleasure from cigarette. Or for example, when you got used to a certain brand of cigarettes you wouldn't be able to switch to another, a milder or stronger one. Because your throat will immediately detect the lack or excess of irritation and you will feel discomfort from smoking these cigarettes. And that is also the reason why cigarette smokers don't usually smoke cigars as the irritation from cigars is much more intense.

Apart from the satisfaction from inhalation, there is a nicotine satisfaction as well.

For the same reason the inhaler rejects a brand of cigarettes much stronger than that. When inhaling, we get our nicotine treat and the more is the surface of our inhalation system that absorbs this nicotine from cigarettes, the more intense is the pleasure from smoking. In other words, when you don't inhale the smoke from cigarettes, your nicotine absorbing surface is your mouth only.

But when a smoker inhales the surface that absorbs nicotine is much larger, including bronchi. As to the cigars, it is a different story, because cigar smokers are not frequent consumers. It can be compared to a medicine given in a huge dose but only once, against the same medicine given in small doses but regularly.

Therefore the effect from smoking cigarettes is more powerful than that of cigars. Yet cigarette smokers consume nicotine in small portions; the frequency of consumption is very high, while it is physically impossible to smoke more that one cigar at once.

The results of cigarette research proved that the only poisoning effect of cigarettes is from the nicotine and a very small amount of cellulose in paper. No other drugs there detected, despite all the presumptions.
Nicotine is very addictive, but mostly in adolescence when nervous system is not stable. Usually it is the time when the smoking habit is formed for the majority of people.

Another type of smoking, which people get pleasure from is a so-called leisure smoking.

It is spread mostly among young women. The cigarettes they consume are usually mild ones and they don't inhale the smoke. Actually, this is the most harmless kind of smoking, as there is almost no evidence of nicotine poisoning. Very rarely these smokers develop a long-term habit of smoking cigarettes, as the majority of them usually give up upon the first signs of health disorders caused by smoking.
