Cigar Humidor Buying Tips - By: Joe Marley

Buying a cigar humidor is a serious step into the life of a cigar connoisseur, and it should be a well-researched purchase to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth, because a bad quality humidor will ruin your cigars that you’re trying to store and age.

Most places that sell cigar humidors list the size by ‘Cigar Count’ which is quite a misleading factor, because cigar count varies GREATLY from place to place, as well as what kind of humidor the place is selling it to you. Make sure you look at the actual dimensions to determine how many cigars it can carry. Multiply the L x W x H to get the cubic inches of the humidor and use that to compare two different humidors.

When looking for a humidor online it can be quite tough to gauge the quality, but there are a few things that should look for:

* Make sure Spanish Cedar is being used for the inside lining. Spanish Cedar absorbs moisture and is specifically used for humidors. Do not purchase a humidor that doesn’t have Spanish Cedar for the inside lining, it will is well worth the extra effort and cost.
* Look for cigar humidors that have acrylic instead of glass for glass top humidors, or a screen printing of a wood inlay instead of using real wood. These are signs that the manufacturing is skimping out on quality, and chances are if they have then other areas of the humidor are going to have quality problems as well.
* Pay attention to the joinery of the humidor. High quality humidors use dove tails, or splines and are made of exotic woods. Affordable humidors should have at least mitered corners for the joints. A mitre or miter joint is a joint made by beveling each of two parts to be joined, usually at a 45° angle, to form a corner, usually a 90° angle. It is often used in making picture frames. Butt joints should be avoided. A butt joint is a joinery technique in which two members are joined by simply butting them together.
* A picture is worth a thousand words. If the humidor looks cheap, then it most likely is cheap and you’re going to get cheap quality. Especially when buying online pay attention to detail on the humidor and look closely at the cigar humidor’s finish and the hardware that is shown in the pictures.

Online Vendors Often Have Inflated Shipping
Sure a larger cigar humidor can be quite costly to ship, but if you have a humidor that costs only $20 then it won’t have shipping that costs $30. Average desktop cigar humidors (about 13?x10?x6?) should not cost more than about $15. Also make sure you check the return policy, don’t buy from any that says “No returns if box is opened”, or “All sales are final”, if they are a reputable dealer then you should be able to return the humidor if it’s not what you expected.

The Bigger Humidor The Better
Make sure you get a bigger humidor than what you think you may need. It’s better to get one that is slightly bigger, than to have to pay for it a few months later by getting a new humidor.

Make sure you don’t skimp out on quality or cost when buying a humidor, because the cigar humidor is your last line of defense in aging your cigars and keeping them fresh. There’s no point to spend on good quality cigars, but then skimp out on a humidor when it’s the thing that’s going to keep your cigars good quality.
