At first site it might seem sensible to use the most powerful binoculars you can find but in fact this doesn’t necessarily make sense. If you’re bird watching for instance, you might not need a pair that allow you see to see hundreds of meters away – buying a pair like this would simply be a waste of money.

Bird watching binoculars are probably better if they’re not too heavy as well since dragging them around can make any bird watching expedition feel like very hard work. How useable your binoculars are depends also on how steady your hands are – if you haven’t got a tripod or stand then the slightest wobble can make it very difficult to focus on anything. The higher the magnification, the greater the wobble. You might gain in distance but you’ll lose in clarity.

According to most experts 10 power is the upper limit of bird watching binoculars that are hand held and some even suggest that bird watchers can see just as much or even more with eight or even seven power. Size is also not necessarily relevant. The person next to you might have a much larger pair of bird watching binoculars but these might not much more powerful. The design of the eyepiece is what determines a pair of binoculars’ power or magnification. The eyepiece design usually has nothing to do with the size of the binoculars themselves.

People often think that larger binoculars have a better field of vision but this is also not necessarily the case. The field of view does depends to a large extent on the binoculars’ eyepiece design but the magnification is also important. You might have two similar bird watching binoculars but different with magnification. Here the lower powered one will have the wider field of view.
