Choosing the College: Extracurricular Activities Are Important - By: Alvin Hanson

What are you going to do when studying at the college? Are you shrugging you shoulders and answering irresolutely: “To study”? It is definitely so, this is the primary aim of all high school graduates who enter colleges. They are ready to face demanding professors, challenging classes, test, etc. However, there is a more pleasant side of college life, it is your free time and it is necessary to think about it when choosing a college as well. Even if you are planning to devote much time and effort to your studies (that is a very good choice, by the way), you should still remember an old proverb, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. You are not dull, are you? Thus, inquire about campus activities available at the college you have an eye on.

Sports

• If you are an extravert, you, probably, like team kinds of sports. Inquire about sport teams (fraternity teams, sorority teams, dorms teams). If you choose a college with developed sport facilities, it will do you good: it will keep you fit and you will find new friends among the team members.

• If you are an introvert, you should choose a college that provides opportunities to go in for individual kinds of sports (swimming, diving, etc.).

Fraternities/Sororities

• Though fraternities and sororities are often blamed for idleness, endless parties and alcohol abuse, one should not be so categorical and critical. First, you should get to know the real state of things at the fraternities and sororities. If they are places where you can find new friends and support, it is very good.

• Fraternities and sororities are the places that can develop your leadership skills. They usually have their own budgets, governing bodies; they are real organizations lead by students. If you want to develop your leadership skills, choose a college with active Greek life.
