Choosing the Best Domestic Pet for Small children - By: Den Williams

There are two schools of thought on what constitutes the ideal furry companion for little ones. On one hand are those who claim that it is the self-sufficient feline; perfectly satisfied to permit themselves to be observed from a safe distance, and sometimes deigning to permit a hand to give them a short stroke. On the other hand, there sit the canine lovers, who maintain that no childhood is truly complete if it lacks the wagging tail of a four-legged friend. Obviously, there are those people who suggest that the best option is no pet at all, but we'll disregard these people, shall we?

For kids who live in flats, small house animals are the ideal, and often times, the only alternative. Fish may be attractive and enjoyable to watch, but don't truly offer the complete pet experience. Smaller birds can possibly be trained to sit on a hand, however they are sensitive to colds and drafts and can be messy beyond belief, a thing worth considering if you are concerned about trying to keep things neat. Different rodents offer various alternatives, some more desirable solutions than others. Rats are generally smart, if you discount the fact that they're, well, rats. They can even be surprisingly loving and are quite easy for a child to look after. What if you really don't like the thought of a rat?
Guinea pigs are another choice to take into consideration. The good natured guinea pig can be a great first pet for most kids to start off with.

If your house is large enough and the entire family agrees, then a puppy may be a fine option as well. Remember that you'll find several points to take into consideration when choosing a dog breed, but there are quite a few that may easily fit in with more or less any family. They may include the mellow pug, the smart beagle as well as the popular Golden Retriever and Labrador breeds. Of course, all households are urged to check their local animal shelter for their latest household member first.

Furthermore, of course, there is the kitten. Disliked by some people for its perceived aloofness, the cat is a good pet, this is especially true for those families which are involved in many activities. Suitably fed, a cat will look after itself if it is left for a while and they will happily relax on your couch until you return.

Regardless of the pet your family chooses, make sure it is a sound, affectionate option for the whole family, including the child that will bond with it stronger than anyone else in the household.
