You will need housemates to share your rented student property, but maybe choosing your pals from the bar would not work out. Here at Househustler we want to help you find your ideal student accommodation and the best people to share it with. Here are our top tips for picking great sharers.

• Know yourself. What kinds of company do you enjoy? Do you need reliable people around you? Do you prefer noise or peace? What habits do you find really annoying?

• Be honest about your strengths and faults. What's your real attitude to tidiness, housework and dishwashing? Can you be helpful with small maintenance jobs, bargain-hunting at the supermarket, tackling officials and paperwork?

• Would you prefer a mixed-sex or single-sex household?

• Consider your preferred age group. Would you like housemates from your own study-year, or maybe mature students or post-graduates?

• Do you want people from your own subject area, so you could share notes and books, or would you enjoy a broader mix?

• Think about people's hobbies, sports and interests. Would a fanatical keep-fitter or a poor violinist send you crazy?

• Politics and religion can cause bad arguments. How tolerant can you be of others' beliefs, allegiances and activities?

• Decide if the house is to be a smokers’ den, or smoke free

• What kind of people would be helpful assets to the household? An IT expert, DIY specialist, car owner or excellent cook might make an ideal sharer for your student property.

• Is the prospective sharer (reasonably) solvent? You need housemates who will pay their agreed share of the expenses and not leave you struggling with unpaid bills.

No-one will score ten out of ten, so don't be too stringent. Neither should you accept anyone whom makes you feel uncomfortable, even if you're desperate. That's a recipe for house-sharing disaster.
