Choosing an Engagement Ring - By: Tom Jui

When it comes time to choose an engagement ring, you may well be forgiven for panicking somewhat and wanting to simply curl up in your bed, away from the vast choice of diamonds and gold rings, hoping that, instead, just maybe an onion ring will be good enough.

However, choosing the right ring doesn’t actually have to be that hard. The first step is to start very early. It is best not to make an engagement ring the first piece of jewellery you ever buy your loved one. Having an idea of how well liked the items you choose are is going to make a big difference and offer you the confidence to invest in what can be a very significant and costly piece of jewellery once it comes time to propose.

Therefore, try buying some kind of eternity ring or ordinary diamond rings for another occasion earlier in the relationship. Whilst such a gesture will be extremely well appreciated, it will also serve to do many things. Firstly, it will give you some experience in choosing jewellery that she loves, and secondly it will give you a chance to find out ring sizes without any suspicions arising that you might be proposing. On top of this, you will get to see just how much she wears the ring you offer and therefore how accurate you are at judging the type of jewellery she likes.

To buy the right jewellery, you will need to have a good idea of the current types of jewellery she already wears. Looking at the metal, the size, the colour and the types of gemstone she chooses should alone give you a good idea of the types of ring she might like when it comes time to choosing diamond engagement rings. Also, be sure to pay attention when you go out shopping. It is very easy for men to simply switch off once a woman starts explaining which rings she would love to have, but instead, make sure you pay heed, and keep such information tucked away for a later date.

Finally, you have to consider cost. It was once believed that the equivalent of two month’s salary should be spent on an engagement ring. Whilst this belief was the result of clever marketing, the amount you spend will still very much be important. Don’t spend more than you can realistically afford, as no one wants to be engaged to someone with bailiffs knocking on the door to repossess the ring. However, make sure you do spend enough to ensure a great quality of ring and also that you are showing that you will be able to save money and provide for your future spouse should the need be there.

Choosing the right ring doesn’t have to be as daunting as it might seem, and with just a small amount of groundwork along with some resilience (so don’t just choose the first ring you see), it can be easy to find something that will be the right style and quality for your loved one to wear it for the rest of her life.
