There are many elements that you will need to consider before choosing a web designer for your website project. Taking a serious look at a web designer’s skills is very important to you, especially if your website is not a hobby site, but in fact a backbone to your business!

The first thing you need to do is find a web designer, this could be by word of mouth, checking local shops or offices or searching Google for “web design Hampshire” as an example.
When you have decided on a selection of designers to compare you then need to start thinking about what skills they need to have.

A common mistake for a client to make is to not understand all that is involved in building a website, and this often leads to them choosing the wrong web designer for the job. So ask yourself the following questions;

Do I have a company logo ready to be used on the internet?
What is the purpose of the website?
Do I need to sell goods through my website?
Do I need to offer support to my customers through the website?

This small list is by no way definitive, but it should at least give you an idea of what your site needs to do when built.

Now you should be able to start analysing the extra skills your web designer needs. If you need a logo for the website they will need good graphic design skills. If you are looking to be competitive in a marketplace you need to know they have an understanding of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

Do they have a good portfolio? Can you see sites they have already built, and are their previous clients happy with the work? Research their reputation across the internet, call a selection of their clients and ask if everything was completed as asked and on time.

If you are happy to go ahead get a structured plan, allow for some delays and make sure the project is priced fairly. That does not mean go with the cheapest quote, but any web designer should be able to justify their cost to you.
