Choosing a Fairfax Martial Arts School - By: Pat Tray

While there is a range of different exercise and fitness options for residents of Fairfax, martial arts are particularly popular. There are many reasons for taking up the practice and study of these arts: not only do they enable students to improve their physical fitness, but they also encourage a change of philosophy and an approach to life that can have significant benefits across every aspect of a persons’ being. Of course, this can be a benefit from many different leisure activities, but the holistic approach offered by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Jeet-Kune Do, and MMA, among others, mean that many people find a shift in their outlook after only a short amount of time. However, the amount of choice on offer can be a little bewildering. Here are some of the factors you might want to consider when choosing a martial art:

A World of Choice:

Because of the wealth of choice on offer to potential Fairfax martial arts practitioners, it’s important for you to investigate what each particular form offers. There will be a lot of hype surrounding different types of art – after all the instructors are in a marketplace fighting for students. Not every person will be suited to each technique. Many schools offer free taster sessions, so don’t pay to sign up to anything until you’ve had a chance to try it out. It’s important to first ask yourself what you want to get out of training.

Horses for Courses:

Your physical build can play an important role in your decision. If you’re tall and lean, you might want to try the faster techniques such as Muay Thai. Those who are shorter and larger of build might find the more defensive arts such as forms of Jiu-Jitsu more to their taste. There are also different levels of formality, and this can vary from school to school. Some will be very strict, with a strong emphasis on discipline, while others will foster a relaxed atmosphere, where you might learn at a slower rate, but feel more at home. Whatever your choice, make sure you speak to other Fairfax martial arts students to find out what they would recommend.

Picking a School:

So, you’ve picked a technique and you’ve decided you want to join one of the Fairfax martial arts communities. But how to pick a school? Firstly, a phone call should give you a good first impression. Have a list of questions prepared and listen carefully to the answers. Do you feel that you’re getting honest replies from someone who knows what they’re talking about? As outlined above, make sure you can take part in a trial lesson, check that all students are provided with proper supervision, and always check credentials. But the best recommendation of all is always word of mouth – ask around, and listen to those in the know.
