Choosing Table Tennis Equipment – Table Tennis Bats - By: Brans

The two main components of table tennis bats chosen by the player are the blade and 2 sheets of rubber on the forehand and backhand. In this article we will discuss these two components of a table tennis bat as well as the different aspects you must take into consideration when choosing each component.

Table Tennis Blade
Table Tennis Blades come in all shapes and sizes designed to suit players with varying styles of play. For example my personal preference for a blade is straight handle although there other players who prefer a flared handle. The style of handle is basically a personal choice for most players much the same as the weight of a blade which can be light or heavy. The speed of a blade is another important factor to consider because fast and slow custom-made blades are generally manufactured to suit different player’s style of play.

Table Tennis Rubber
Like table tennis blades there are a wide variety of rubbers available which you can choose from to suit your style of play. When choosing a rubber you will need to take into consideration whether you prefer using a hard or soft rubber. Generally, a softer rubber is used by players who have more feeling for the ball than they would have if using a harder rubber.

Also you will need to consider if you want a faster rubber on your forehand or a slower rubber on your backhand or vice versa. From my experience I have found that most players tend to prefer a faster rubber on their attacking forehand, while they will have a slower rubber on their backhand to assist with blocking. Again, this will vary between players because of different styles of play.

Finding the Ideal Combination
Overall, it can be difficult finding the ideal combination of blade and rubbers that will suit your requirements. One method you can use is to borrow another players bat to get some idea on how a particular rubber or blade performs. But ultimately the final judgment on which blade and rubbers will best suit your needs and playing style is up to you alone.
